Imperial Anxieties: Italian Colonialism and the Formation of an Official Mind
An Assistant Professor of History, Eileen Ryan specializes in Italian colonialism in North Africa. She received her Ph.D. in Modern European History from Columbia University in 2012, where she wrote her dissertation on the relationships between Italian officials and Muslim notables in the Sufi order of the Sanusiyya. Ryan recently published an article on Italian perceptions of pan-Arab movements in a special issue of the Annali della Fondazione Ugo La Malfa, an Italian historical journal. She is currently working on an article related to railroad construction in colonial Libya and a second article on the anxiety among Italian imperialists about the lack of a cohesive Italian colonial culture.
