On May 8, 2013 the Department of English’s First Year Writing Program held its annual award and scholarship luncheon. Students and faculty members alike were honored for their hard work, dedication and overall excellence in the English department.
The Mary Ann Mannino scholarships honor students whose writing has developed throughout the semester. The awards also recognize students’ concern for their community. At the inaugural award ceremony last spring, Mannino remarked that it is important to award students who show improvement. Winners of the 2013 Mannino award were Alexandra Berg and Zexiang Liu. Devan Spross, Rebecca Yelton and Sara Abdulrasool were runners up for the award.
The Lebofsky award was also celebrated at the luncheon. Established in 2012 by Dr. Dennis Lebofsky, CLA ’61, and Joan Shapiro Lebofsky, EDU ’64, the Lebofky award is awarded to students whose writing has shown improvement and who have excelled in the spring semester in the required First-Year Writing Program. This year’s winners were Thurein Oo and Malik Gilliam. Award honorable mentions were Jimena Vazquez and Tykee James.
Receiptents of the Outstanding Instructor Awards for Fall 2012 were Nicole Banas (also being inducted into the Hall of Fame), Matt Barbehenn, Kevin Basl, Paul Benzon, Michael Blancato, Lee Gayle, Lisa Grunberger, Ted Howell, Kathy Hubbard, Juliana Rausch, Les Robinson, Lucas Sheaffer, James Sellers, Audrey Szepinski, and Mike Usino.
