The annual CLA Alumni Career Panel is an event that allows a number of successful Temple College of Liberal Arts alumni the opportunity to share their success stories, provide advice, and to engage in a thoughtful exchange of Q&A with proactive undergraduate students. The Spring 2013 CLA Alumni Career Panel included the following speakers:
- Dennis McCrossen, CLA ’77 (Psychology Major, Senior Human Resource Specialist at the IRS) – Dennis has worked for the IRS for 38 years. His current position in HR involves recruitment, staffing, labor relations, and training. Based on his experience, he strongly encourages students to look into obtaining a career with the federal government. Also, he believes it is important to understand the difference between “doing what you like” and “liking what you do.” While writing poetry, for instance, may be your passion, it could be very difficult to to support a home and a family as a poet. Therefore, finding something you can enjoy that will also pay the bills is ideal.
- Eric Appelbaum, CLA ’95 (Political Science Major, Attorney at Thomas, Thomas & Hafer, LLP) – Eric’s career involves analyzing information and boiling it down in order to educate clients on different legal options. During his time at Temple, he learned to “read, analyze, and communicate,” and his studies in Political Science helped him to develop his verbal and writing skills. In pursuit of a career, Eric stresses networking, building relationships, and advancing one’s education.
- Joel Goodhart, CLA ’75 (Political Science Major, Founder and Partner of BIRE Financial Services) – In his work at BIRE, Joel Goodhart essentially “manages people’s money.” Similar to Dennis’ advice, he stresses that what a student goes to school for may not be what his or her career develops into. He advises students to make a habit of listening more than speaking, quoting the old saying, “you have two ears and one mouth.” Most importantly, however, Joel encourages students to keep their options.
- Joyce K. Salzberg, CLA ’69, MSW ’79 (Religion Major, Founder of Oxford Consulting Services, Inc. and Chief Executive Officer at Sunny Days Early Childhood Developmental Services, Inc.) – After graduating in 1969 at Temple, Joyce Salzberg went on ten years later to receive her Masters from Temple as well. She worked as Director of the United Cerebral Palsy Association of New Jersey for 13 years. Now, she has her own business, the Home HealthCare Corp., which offers services in Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy, Physical Therapy, Nursing, and Psychiatry/Psychology. Her biggest piece of advice for students is to take a look at the healthcare industry, as she believes it is still a steadily growing field.
The CLA Alumni Career Panel is one of the great tools available to students to open their minds to the various opportunities available and to receive advice on how to pursue them. With such a diverse group of passionate, engaging and successful speakers, this year’s event was a great success.
