About Us
Economics is the study of how we allocate resources among alternative uses to satisfy our wants. Virtually all of the public and personal issues which confront us today have an important economic component. For this reason, the economic way of thinking plays a valuable role in helping us make sense of the complex world in which we live.
In addition, the study of economics is excellent preparation for a wide range of careers. Economics majors with bachelor's degrees are well prepared to be managers and leaders in both the public and private sectors. Training in economics at the undergraduate level also provides a solid basis for professional study in law, business, public administration, and the health sciences. Please read this presentation for more details, this Excel spreadsheet from the Wall Street Journal regarding pay for economics majors versus others, and this post on the New York Times Economix blog; see also this link. You may be surprised! You may also be surprised as a stuudent in one of our classes to find that the Pennsylvania State Treasurer has shown up to give a presentation.
The Department of Economics offers a wide range of courses upon which students can draw, depending on their academic and career interests. Students should consult with a departmental adviser to see how specific courses can be used to match their particular interests.
The Temple Economics Society (TES) is the student professional organization for economics majors. All Temple students with an interest in economics, whether they are economics majors or not, are welcome to join TES. Economics majors may also become members of Omicron Delta Epsilon (ODE), the national economics honor society, if they meet the admissions requirements of the organization. For more information about both organizations, please contact Ms. Janice Vincent at (215) 204-8880.
