Charlotte Phelps received her B.A. from Radcliffe College and her Ph.D. from Yale University. She has focused her research on explaining individual economic behavior with preferences measured from Thematic Apperception Tests. The TAT is a personality test based on imaginative stories written in response to picture cues. In 1980-1984, she conducted surveys of her students and estimated their Engel curves and labor supply curves, holding TAT preferences constant. In an experiment, she found that the TAT explained differences between their transitive and intransitive choices. She tested hypotheses embedded in Becker's theory of altruism in the family with data from nationwide surveys. She is currently writing a book on personality development and economic behavior. She is on the Fulbright Senior Specialists Roster.
