Study Abroad in Russia
Temple University does not have its own study abroad program in Russia, but Temple students do study abroad on a variety of programs in Russia for the summer, semester and entire academic year. Students must complete Russian 2002 (fourth-semester Russian) or its equivalent before going on study abroad.
Why study abroad? It’s a life-changing experience that will give you the language and intercultural skills you need to use Russian in your career in government, business, media, education or a non-profit agency!
The best study abroad programs in Russia are those listed here:
American Councils for International Education: ACTR/ACCELS (link to www.acrussiaabroad.org ) with summer, semester, and academic year programs in Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Vladimir.
Middlebury College's Schools Abroad offers programs in Moscow, Yaroslavl', and Irkutsk: Middlebury in Russia
The Council on International Educational Exchange (link to www.ciee.org) with summer, semester, and academic year programs in St. Petersburg.
The School of Russian and Asian Studies (link to www.sras.org) with summer, semester, and academic year programs in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Nizhny Novgorod, Irkutsk, Khabarovsk, and Vladivostok.
Be sure to talk with Temple’s Study Abroad Office (link to www.temple.edu/studyabroad) to plan your program.
We encourage students to consider applying for scholarships through the National Security Education Program (link to www.iie.org/nsep/nsephome.htm), which has an annual deadline of December for study abroad for the academic year that starts the following fall. (If you want to study abroad in summer 2007, you will have to apply for the NSEP by December 2005!) We also encourage you to apply for the Benjamin Gilman International Scholarship Program if you are a Pell Grant Recipient (link to www.iie.org/programs/gilman/index.htm).
Before leaving for study abroad, we encourage you to read: Maximizing Study Abroad: Strategies for Language and Culture Use available from the Center for Advanced Research on Language Acquisition of the University of Minnesota (www.carla.umn.edu).
