Dr. Shelli Avenevoli, a former student of Lawrence Steinberg, has agreed to serve as the NIMH Acting Deputy Director. Shelli currently heads the Developmental Trajectories of Mental Disorders Branch, a position she has held since 2008. She first joined NIMH as a staff scientist in 2001, in the Section on Developmental Genetic Epidemiology of the Mood and Anxiety Disorders Program, and then moved to the extramural program in 2005 to become chief of the Emotion, Mood and Depressive Disorders Program. Shelli has been heavily involved with a number of key NIMH efforts, among them the revision of the Strategic Plan at NIMH, re-defining the Institute’s approach to supporting research in neurodevelopment and bipolar disorder, and serving as liaison to other agencies for special initiatives. Her dedication and exceptional performance was recognized this year with a NIH Director’s Award and a NIMH Director’s Award for Supervisor of the Year. Shelli received her Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology from Temple and completed an NIMH postdoctoral fellowship in psychiatric epidemiology at Yale University School of Medicine.
