Biography

Dr. Waskie is a life-long Pennsylvanian, born and raised in Bloomsburg and a graduate of Bloomsburg University. He has also studied in Salzburg, Austria; at the University of Marburg, Germany; and at Charles University in Prague, where he studied Slavic Linguistics. He went on to receive M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from New York University. He has worked with the U.S. State Department as a Foreign Service officer. He spent 31 years in public education in Bucks County before “retiring” to become a professor at Temple University as well as an adjunct professor at two other Philadelphia area Universities. He is a veteran of US Army service as an ‘Army Linguist’. Andy is an eminent Civil War historian, a published author and is extremely active in Civil War history, research and preservation. He is a specialist on the life and career of Gen. George Meade, whom he portrays in a “1st person” style Living-History performance.

He is the founder and current president of the General Meade Society of Philadelphia, an organization that seeks to promote the services and contributions of that noble hero of Gettysburg. He is also an active participant and founding member of the ‘Civil War & Emancipation Studies at Temple’ (CWEST) program, promoting Civil War & Emancipation history. Andy is also extremely knowledgeable on the history of Philadelphia and has served as a Tour Director there since 1982. He has also helped to found and is a member of four Civil War Round Tables in the greater Philadelphia area. He serves on the Boards of many historical organizations, including The Grand Army of the Republic Civil War Museum and Library (GAR) and Laurel Hill Cemetery, and is a member of the Union League of Philadelphia.
